Research in Southern India provides a sweet look at preservation of ecological knowledge

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2012) ? A well-known proverb states that, "It takes a village to raise a child." According to Kathryn Demps, it also takes a village to preserve ecological knowledge in upcoming generations.

Demps, A Boise State University visiting assistant professor in anthropology, studies behavioral and evolutionary ecology in small-scale societies. Her latest project looks at the honey-gathering Jenu Kuruba tribe in South India and how its cultural knowledge is being preserved, or lost, in our modern world.

"What we learn from others -- our culture, skills, values, beliefs and knowledge -- is passed through the generations," she said. "How it is passed down can change the body of knowledge."

Demps noted that in today's race toward homogenous societies, indigenous knowledge is being lost even faster than languages.

One example is medicinal specialists. In the 1980s, the first hospital in the area populated by the Jenu Kuruba opened; 1985 was the last year for a recorded medicinal ceremony. Gurus didn't train more apprentices because no one wanted to learn, and as a result, the knowledge has been completely lost in just one generation.

The Jenu Kuruba comprise a band of small communities located in the forested Kodagu District. For generations, young men from the tribe have collected wild honey by nimbly scaling massive trees. Because honey is in such high demand in the cities for its purported medicinal qualities, it fetches a high price and is an important part of the local economy.

But the skills needed to harvest this precious commodity are at risk of dying out. Several former honey-gathering communities were moved away from the forests in an attempt to create national parks, and those that remain (thanks to special rights from the government to live in the forest and collect non-timber products) are now sending children to school during the day, drastically affecting how, or even if, they learn necessary honey-gathering skills.

Prior to construction of the local school in the 1970s, children rarely received a formal, western education. While the average level of education is still low, most children are spending at least a few critical years learning new skills at the expense of traditional, indigenous knowledge.

"Kids need to learn how to climb trees and how to make big, smoky torches from sticks wrapped in green leaves," Demps said. "They have to learn to climb onto the branches and cut off the honeycomb. There also are ritual things like the honey-collecting song that is supposed to appease the bees and show brotherhood."

Locals learn at an early age to scale trees by shimmying 100 feet up the trunk, pressing their feet flat into the bark and using their arms to pull themselves ever higher. Young boys pick this up by playing a traditional climbing game called mara cothi, which means "tree monkey" and is similar to an arboreal version of tag. Because the climb can be so dangerous, young men often leave offerings at the base of a tree, asking for a blessing for a safe climb.

More skilled gatherers also need to know how to work with the bees, coaxing the queen into a new hive, gathering the honey or calming a troubled colony. This is especially important given that the largest honeybees in the region are massive compared to the average Idaho varieties, and pack a powerful sting.

Demps and fellow researchers are evaluating data collected from almost 200 local residents ages 6-65 in order to understand what residents know at various ages, and who they learned it from.

"If we know what people are learning, and how they are learning it, we can make recommendations that may remove conflicts affecting traditional knowledge," Demps said. "For instance, giving children just five or six days a month off of school can make a big difference. That has been shown to be enough time for children to learn the skills they need to collect honey but still learn western knowledge. They also can learn how to collect forest foods for better nutrition as they are out hunting and gathering, as well as medicinal knowledge and how to manage the environment so that they are less likely to deforest the area."

Demps has published two papers based on her research and is working on another based on traditional knowledge and schooling. She hopes to eventually write a book examining the tribe's traditional life ways that draws on various firsthand accounts over the past two centuries.

50 Grades of Grey: Harvard approves BDSM club

University of Chicago

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

It's a club where you might, in fact, use a club: Harvard University has joined the small but growing roster of U.S. colleges that have approved official student organizations devoted to kinky sex.

Harvard administrators were to formally approve the group, Harvard College Munch, on Friday, The Harvard Crimson reported. The recognition means the group, which has grown to 30 members since its informal founding earlier this year, can officially meet on campus to discuss issues related to the bondage-discipline, dominant-submission, and sadism-masochism communities, known collectively as BDSM.

More important, its founder told the newspaper, speaking under the pseudonym "Michael," is that the move bestows "the fact of legitimacy."

While Harvard's club drew widespread attention this week, it's far from the only BDSM club officially recognized by, or at least tolerated at, U.S. colleges.

At the University of Minnesota, Kinky U is Student Organization No. 2370. It meets weekly ? after office hours "for maximum safety and confidentiality" ? to discuss "topics related to kink and the kinky community."

At Tufts University in Medford, Mass., Tufts Kink started meeting this semester.

"I think there?s a number of students who feel sort of isolated and alienated, and I think it's very powerful for them to have just a place where they can express themselves and a place where they can make friends," co-founder Anschel Schaffer-Cohen told The Tufts Daily.

There's no national registry of campus BDSM groups, but consensus is that the oldest is at Columbia University, in New York, where Conversio Virium meets on campus every Monday night at 9.

"Conversio virium" is Latin for "conversion of forces," and the group says it dedicates itself to 'the full exploration of BDSM, both in its sexual and spiritual aspects."

"We encourage acceptance and communication between members," its charter says. "We urge them to learn from each other's play styles and experiences and to set aside any assumptions they may have about who people are and what they do."?

Actual sex isn't allowed at such on-campus gatherings, which usually host discussions or the occasional live demonstration of safe and consensual kinky sex.

The point is to "raise general awareness of kink and to promote acceptance and understanding of BDSM," according to the bylaws of Risk-Aware Consensual Kink, or RACK, at the University of Chicago.

RACK is an intellectual group, it says, not a play group. It provides "resources to students who are interested in or curious about BDSM" and demonstrations that "give students an opportunity to learn from experienced members of the BDSM community about safely practicing kink."

Supreme Court to Determine American Parents' Rights to Retrieve Children Wrongfully Abducted or Retained Abroad

International Family Law Attorney Michael Manely appeals to U.S. Supreme Court to determine all American parents' rights to obtain a court order for the return of children abducted or wrongfully retained abroad. Manely's client, U.S. Army Sergeant 1st Class Jeff Chafin, who served his country in Iraq and Afghanistan, turns now to his country to protect his parental rights.

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) November 30, 2012

On December 5, 2012, The Supreme Court of the United States will hear oral argument in Chafin v. Chafin, No. 11- 1347, to determine if Federal Courts may order the return of a child abducted or wrongfully retained abroad. The Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, Atlanta, GA, held in Bekier v. Bekier, 248 F. 3d 1051 (11th Cir. 2001) that Federal Courts lack jurisdiction to issue such an order once the child is taken from U.S. soil.

On February 6, 2012 the same court denied Sergeant 1st Class Chafin?s request to review a Federal District Court decision allowing his four year old daughter to be taken by his estranged wife to Scotland. The Eleventh Circuit Court held that even if the District Court had erred, they were powerless to issue a return order because the child was no longer in The U.S.

Other Federal Circuit Courts of Appeal disagree, citing the provisions set forth by The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction and The Federal International Child Abduction and Retention Act. The Supreme Court of The United States granted Chafin?s Petition for Writ of Certiorari to resolve the split. Chafin?s international family law attorney, Michael E. Manely, points out that rendering U.S. Courts powerless to order the return of American children would encourage abduction and retention abroad which the Hague Convention on Child Abduction is intended to prevent.

Chafin's daughter was turned over to her Scottish mother by a lower Federal District Court. Attorney Manely explains that the lower court denied his request for a stay and within two hours Chafin's daughter was taken out of the country by her mother, a woman she hadn?t seen in a year. Chafin says even though he served in Iraq and Afghanistan, he has never feared anything more than losing the opportunity to parent his daughter. He is looking to the U.S. Courts to protect his parental rights.

Fired employee reinstated? - Business Management Daily

Take heart if you have ever de??cided to reinstate an employee or re??scind discipline because the employee threatened litigation. Doing so won?t wipe clean his disciplinary record or imply that you admitted he?s living up to your expectations.

If he continues to perform poorly and doesn?t take advantage of his second chance to improve, you will be able to use his poor work record as justification to terminate him.

Recent case: Jerome drove buses for the Twin Cities? Metro Transit system. Over the years, he got plenty of complaints from customers. For example, several said he would park the bus and run personal errands, making the bus late. Management verified several complaints by checking the tape from the bus?s onboard video camera system. It disciplined Jerome. If a complaint couldn?t be verified, it wasn?t used.

Finally, Jerome was fired and he filed an internal grievance. Metro Transit reinstated him as a compromise, and he dropped the grievance. Still, the complaints rolled in and he was fired again.

He sued, alleging that because he had been reinstated, that meant he must have been performing his job to expectations and that none of his prior behavior could be used to justify his termination.

The court disagreed. It saw the reinstatement as a one-time gift, not an admission that Metro Transit had made a mistake by firing Jerome. It was free to use the past conduct against him. (Paul v. Metropolitan Council, No. 10-4759, DC MN, 2012)

Samsung Galaxy smart phones and tablets infringe Apple patents: Dutch Court

A Dutch court on Wednesday ruled that few of Galaxy smartphones and tablets violate an Apple patent in the most recent round of the mobile giants? legal battle worldwide.

According to the court?s order Samsung has to pay Apple damages, evaluated by the profits made by its sales. This recent suit was in relation to the Android operating system versions 2.2.1 and 3.0 used on Galaxy smartphones and tablets.

This is one among the multiple patent lawsuits between Samsung and Apple in 10 different countries. This is the aftermath of their battle to rule the lucrative mobile market and triumph over consumers with their newest gadgets.

Last month, in an introductory decision a U.S trade panel judge ruled that Samsung infringed Apple patents to make its phones and tablets. Samsung also won a court case last month when a Dutch court ruled the company did not violate an Apple patent using certain multi-touch techniques in manufacturing its smartphones and tablets.

96% The House I Live In

All Critics (47) | Top Critics (17) | Fresh (45) | Rotten (2)

The House I Live In is a work of journalism, not propaganda: Jarecki has done his research and leaves it to you to decide what to make of it.

If [it] takes a while to focus, it eventually becomes the conversation starter the subject desperately needs.

Jarecki takes a highly original approach to create a compelling, thought-provoking look at a highly relevant and controversial topic.

An absorbing, disturbing sit.

It's a film as profoundly sad as it is enraging and potentially galvanizing, and it's one of the most important pieces of nonfiction to hit the screen in years.

Jarecki's case is so compelling that, when he concludes by comparing the drug war to the Holocaust, the obvious charge of hyperbole doesn't quite stick.

One of the finest documentaries of the year, this involving film is lucid, sharply well shot and edited, and ultimately so important that it's rather terrifying to watch.

A wide-ranging examination of the futile, self-defeating "war on drugs" ...

One of the best documentaries out this year, and a must-see for Senate and Congress in America.

An angry and personal attack on America's war on drugs contends it is a grotesquely wasteful public-works scheme.

Jarecki is a stickler for sticking to his subject, or sub-subject, until it squeals like a leech victim.

Jarecki offers 100 small conclusions rather than one big one for you to take away.

This urgent and formidably smart movie - perhaps the year's most important political documentary - has opened minds and changed laws already.

Tells a complex story with troubling ease.

Persuasively argues that punitive laws against users have historically involved disproportionately targeting poor, non-white communities.

Jarecki's parade of experts and eyewitnesses is impressive, as are his arguments that race and class prejudice enter into the policing efforts of America's drug warriors.

Jarecki's conclusion is powerfully plausible

There's no confusion about Jarecki's point of view in The House I Live In- he's out to make the case that America's drug laws cause far more damage, to individuals and communities, than drug use ever has

The film deserves credit for offering a unique perspective on a relevant social issue.

The House I Live In is depressing stuff, but it sparks the fires of anger, and from that anger, possible action.

This film could serve as a potent tool for those trying to change 40 years of public policy.

A thought-provoking, compelling documentary that encourages you to look at our national drug policy in a broader context.

Statistics abound in this thorough analysis of the declared war [on drugs] that, like Vietnam, we are losing.

Automakers gear up for a green holiday season

1 hr.

If the upcoming L.A. Auto Show is any indication, American motorists are in for a green holiday season.

A preliminary estimate shows as many as 50 new cars, trucks and crossovers will make their debut during the annual event, the first big U.S. auto show of the 2013 model?year.?

A sizable chunk of those new models will be battery-based, including everything from conventional hybrids to pure battery-electric vehicles. But the L.A.?show also will point out how even conventional gasoline powertrain technology continues to become more and more environmentally friendly.

Among the most significant debuts already announced for Los Angeles, Honda will introduce its first plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle, the Accord PHEV.??

Ford will offer a pair of its own plug-ins, the Fusion Energi sedan and the C-Max Energi ?people-mover.???

The list of pure battery-electric vehicles, or BEVs, will include the new Fiat 500e and the Chevrolet Spark EV, General Motors first fully electrified model since it pulled the EV1 from production just before the turn of the new Millennium.

During a recent two-day media background session, GM revealed some ambitious plans for its electrification program ? which began with the December 2010 launch of the Chevrolet Volt plug-in and which will soon add both the Spark EV and the upcoming Cadillac ELR plug-in. In all, the maker hopes to sell 500,000 battery-based vehicles between now and 2017.

?Plug-based solutions will play a significant role in our technology portfolio going forward,? said global product development chief Mary Barra.

Nissan may be even more ambitious.? Before the end of the decade, it intends to be selling as many as 500,000 battery-based vehicles annually, with products including the planned Infiniti LE battery-electric vehicle set to join the Nissan Leaf it launched about the same time the Chevy Volt hit showrooms.

For its part, the Fusion and C-Max Energi plug-ins will be part of a wave of eight advanced battery vehicles Ford plans to launch within the next couple years, according to Ken Czubay, the maker?s vice president of U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service.

But not everyone is quite so upbeat. Though he will try to wear a smile during the debut of the 500e, Fiat/Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has dubbed battery cars ?economic lemons,? a reference to the reality that the underlying technology is so expensive manufacturers have to absorb a significant portion of the price tag in order to win over consumers.??

By some estimates, the current crop of BEVs and PHEVs cost at least $10,000 more to produce than they are selling for ??before a buyer works in the available federal and state tax credits.

And even then, a new study by J.D. Power and Associates warns that, ?Electric vehicles will remain a very small part of the U.S. market unless automakers can lower prices and demonstrate the economic benefits to consumers.?

No wonder the brand new Honda Fit EV and Toyota RAV4-EV models that will be displayed in L.A. will only be sold at a limited number of California dealerships for at least the next few years.? Critics deride those offerings as ?compliance cars,? built only to satisfy strict zero-emission vehicle, or ZEV, mandates enacted by the demanding California Air Resources Board.

?No one wants to be locked out of the California market,? acknowledges John Mendel, the top American executive at Honda, one of the major makers required to meet the ZEV rules.

Ironically, the L.A.?Auto Show will, yet again, give skeptics the opportunity to promote alternatives to battery power.? The new Dodge Dart Aero model approaches the fuel-efficiency of comparably sized hybrids, note the organizers of the annual Green Car of the Year Award which is announced during the media days at the LA show.

The new Mazda CX-5 SkyActiv crossover will also be in contention, another model that relies on the latest breakthroughs in conventional gas power.?

And the Ford Fusion was named a finalist as much for its advanced, gas-powered EcoBoost engine as for its hybrid and plug-in hybrid options. Only the new Toyota Prius C and Ford C-Max models, among the five finalists, are exclusively battery-based.

The Green Car of the Year Award has notably honored diesels on several occasions. And past winner Audi will bring four new diesels to the LA Auto Show this year, including high-mileage versions of its A6, A7, A8 and Q5 models. Set to start rolling out next year, they?re expected to deliver hybrid-like fuel economy ?but without sacrificing performance,? proclaims Audi of America President Scott Keogh.

While Californians may like to think of their state as the greenest in the country, the reality is that they still appreciate muscle. According to Mercedes-Benz, a full 25 percent of all the maker?s high-performance AMG models are sold in Southern California.

So, no surprise that among the several debuts planned by the German maker it will reveal the fastest production car it has ever built, the 622-horsepower SLS AMG Black Series. (For the moment, Mercedes has not yet committed to bringing a battery-powered version of the 2-seater, the SLS E-Cell, to the U.S. market.)

Bentley, Jaguar and Porsche will also reveal new high-performance products at the LA Convention Center. But these days, one can be mean and green. Or, at least, greener. The new Porsche Carrera 4S will get a big bump in horsepower ? even while delivering about 15% better fuel economy than the outgoing model.

And BMW will bring to LA a version of its upcoming i8 plug-in, the first in a new line of sporty, battery-based vehicles that will also include the i3 battery-electric city car.

The LA Auto Show has a tradition of focusing on green technology.? But California itself has a history of setting the trends that eventually sweep across the rest of America. So what you see at the Los Angeles Convention Center later this month is likely to influence what you drive wherever you live in the years ahead.?

Star Trek Classroom: The next generation of school desks

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

Researchers designing and testing the 'classroom of the future' have found that multi-touch, multi-user desks can boost skills in mathematics.

New results from a 3-year project working with over 400 pupils, mostly 8-10 year olds, show that collaborative learning increases both fluency and flexibility in maths. It also shows that using an interactive 'smart' desk can have benefits over doing mathematics on paper.

Using multi-touch desks in the new classroom, the children were able to work together in new ways to solve and answer questions and problems using inventive solutions. Seeing what your friends are doing, and being able to fully participate in group activities, offers new ways of working in class, the researchers say. The 'Star Trek classroom' could also help learning and teaching in other subjects.

The findings published in the journal Learning and Instruction, show that children who use a collaborative maths activity in the SynergyNet classroom improve in both mathematical flexibility and fluency, while children working on traditional paper-based activities only improve in flexibility.

During the project, the team found that 45% of students who used NumberNet increased in the number of unique mathematical expressions they created after using NumberNet, compared to 16% of students in the traditional paper-based activity.

Lead researcher, Professor Liz Burd, School of Education, Durham University, said: "Our aim was to encourage far higher levels of active student engagement, where knowledge is obtained by sharing, problem-solving and creating, rather than by passive listening. This classroom enables both active engagement and equal access.

"We found our tables encouraged students to collaborate more effectively. We were delighted to observe groups of students enhancing others' understanding of mathematical concepts. Such collaboration just did not happen when students used paper-based approaches."

The Durham University team designed software and desks that recognize multiple touches on the desktop using vision systems that see infrared light. The project called SynergyNet set out to integrate a fully collaborative system of desks, building it into the fabric and furniture of the classroom. The new desks with a 'multi-touch' surface are the central component, and these are networked and linked to a main smartboard.

In terms of current teaching, the new system means that the 'move-to-use' whiteboard is by-passed and the new desks can be both screen and keyboard. The desks act like multi-touch whiteboards and several students can use any one desk at once.

The technology allows all students to take part as opposed to one individual dominating.

Researcher, Emma Mercier, School of Education, Durham University, said: "Cooperative learning works very well in the new classroom because the pupils interact and learn in a different way. The children really enjoy doing maths in this way and are always disappointed when you turn the desks off!

"We can achieve fluency in maths through practice, however, boosting a pupil's ability to find a range of solutions to arithmetic questions is harder to teach. This classroom can help teachers to use collaborative learning to improve their pupils' flexibility in maths."

The teacher plays a key role in the classroom and can send tasks to different tables to individuals and groups. The teacher can also send one group's answers on to the next group to work on and add to, or to the board for a class discussion. A live feed of the desks goes directly to the teacher who can intervene quickly to help an individual while allowing the group work to continue.

Professor Steve Higgins said: "Technology like this has enormous potential for teaching as it can help the teacher to manage and to orchestrate the learning of individuals and groups of learners to ensure they are both challenged and supported so that they can learn effectively."

Such a classroom may be some way off being a regular feature of schools across the world due to the costs in setting it up, and the level of support needed to make it work, however, in just 3 years the project team have noted major improvements in the technology, and a reduction in costs.

The researchers also recognise that task management in the class environment is an issue requiring thought and planning, but the overall potential of the new classroom for improved numeracy, learning, and on-going assessment is very good.

The project has worked with 12 different schools in the North East. SynergyNet is one of eight technology enhanced learning research projects funded by the ESRC and EPSRC as part of the ?12M Teaching and Learning Research Programme into Technology Enhanced Learning.

The project is an inter-disciplinary collaboration at Durham University between the School of Education, the Department of Psychology and the Department of Computer Science.

Manchester City striker Tevez banned for speeding

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:48 a.m. ET Nov. 26, 2012

MORECAMBE, England (AP) -Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has been banned from driving for speeding.

Magistrates in the northern English town of Lancaster imposed the interim ban on Monday after he failed to provide identification when he was caught speeding in nearby Morecambe on March 28.

The Argentina international did not attend the hearing.

His solicitor Gwyn Lewis told the court that "my instructions are though (Tevez) was not the driver on that occasion I am not going to argue against a ban on grounds of exceptional hardship."

Separately, Tevez's Porsche Panamera was impounded in Manchester on Nov. 15 because he could not produce a full British driving license.

Two days later, Tevez mimicked driving a car after he scored twice in his team's Premier League win against Aston Villa.

Detecting Cancer...With a Cellphone?

Smartphone technology is often seen as much of nuisance as it is a convenience, but having that kind of communicative power at our fingertips has a surprising advantage: It?s serving as a bridge, bringing healthcare to Third World countries that had previously been too remote and too costly to reach.

The Kilimanjaro Cervical Screening Project is spearheading one use of smartphone technology in a way that?s surprisingly simple, but could end up saving thousands of women's lives.

Armed with screening kits, treatment tools and cellphones, teams of non-physician medical workers will visit remote locations in rural Tanzania to screen women for cervical cancer. Instead of the swab method used in the typical Pap smear, workers will use their cellphones to photograph a patient?s cervix, text the image to a physician, and then receive back a diagnosis and treatment recommendation.

But can it really be that simple? Dr. Karen Yeates?of Queen's University, who is the lead investigator of the project, told CNN, "That's the beauty of it. For early grade cancers, those will be able to be treated right in the field, right in the rural area."

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), rates of cervical cancer in Africa are up to ten times those in developed countries, and among those diagnosed, about?50,000 women die from it annually.

Though cervical cancer has very low mortality rates in developed countries like the U.S., those rates are generally due to our regular screenings, which catch the cancer in its earliest and most treatable incarnations.?However, in countries like Tanzania, women in remote villages obviously don't have access to those types of preventative measures. In fact, the WHO estimates that by the time most African women are diagnosed with the disease, they?ve already advanced into its latest fatal stages. But regular screenings could put a stop to that.?

The project is another way that the medical field is reimagining cellphones as a means of making healthcare rather effortlessly mobile in order to expand the world's access to it. Earlier this year, high school student?Catherine Wong discovered how to turn her cellphone into a portable ECG machine. Her invention will?bring heart monitoring capabilities to the most remote locations, with results that could be beamed to doctors no matter how far away.

The Kilimanjaro Cervical Screening Project recently gained its funding from being named one of the 68 finalists in Canada?s Grand Challenges, a fund awarded to medical innovators who?ve invented new systems or products to bring healthcare to the poorest parts of the world. The project's $100,000 prize will allow it to begin its initial trials.

So much of good healthcare rests on the early detection of illness, and now that geography and cost aren't the impediments they once were, patients in developing countries have real opportunities to survive illnesses once believed to be fatal.?

Do you expect that "mobile healthcare" may eventually become the standard method of care in countries like the U.S. as well? Let us know what you think about it in the Comments.

Franchising Businesses Offer Opportunity for Entrepreneurs (jeux ...

By Mark G

?It is the dream of many to set up and run their own business to be their own boss and really take charge of their own life. However, for most, it remains nothing more than a dream. For some though, who have the right amount of conviction, dedication and talent, it does become reality. Even those succeeding in setting up shop can fail quickly though, which is why many look at franchising businesses to provide the vital support that they need.

It is far more than support that a franchised business provides though, which is partly the reason for increasing numbers of people venturing into the sector. From providing access to funding, through providing a near immediate turnover to offering long-term success, there is much to be argued for it.

Franchising businesses are proven to work

When a business owner decides to franchise, there are certain clear elements that need to be met. Above anything else, it is essential that the business model has been proven to work. The best franchises can prove this, allowing the investors to follow the guidance given with confidence, whilst having the ability to mold the business for local conditions.

Franchises offer increased success

When the advised business model is followed closely, a franchise can also offer greater opportunities for success when compared to regular start-ups. This is also down to the easier way in which customers can be attracted, particularly with the best franchising businesses already having a national presence, to create local interest. Such presence also allows for easier and more effective marketing, which helps maintain a level of trade.

Securing finance is easier

Such is the nature that franchises provide, many big names and local banks and other lenders are eager to finance their set-up. As well as providing the initial finance to invest in successful ventures, it is also possible that better rates can be found, with lenders understanding that franchises have a better chance of succeeding.

Franchises provide faster results

For all new businesses, it can take time to get established in the local area. Building up awareness and creating a positive opinion can also be cost consuming. However, franchised opportunities are one step ahead of regular set-ups, because of the awareness that is already present, allowing the turnover to reach higher levels more quickly.

Ongoing development and access to support

Another area which allows franchising businesses to increase that likelihood of success for their investors is in the support provided. Right from the get-go, the best companies provide centralized training in how best to maximize opportunities. Further than this though, with franchisees the country over able to provide help and advice, there is a mechanism in place to answer any challenges that can present themselves.

At every level, franchises provide a greater chance of realizing professional ambitions than any other route. Selecting the best franchising businesses to work with is essential for these achievements to be reached though, which is why selecting what to invest in needs to be done with thorough analysis.

Lawrence Watkins, a frequent contributor to theGrio,?is also the?co-founder of?Ujamaa Deals, a?daily deals web destination that focuses on black-owned entities; thus, he has his ear to the streets regarding the best of black small business offerings. CinemaNow adds Ultraviolet support to some of its movies

Bestbuy's CinemaNow has started to embed UltraViolet content into their video-streaming service. It's no huge surprise -- given that the retailer is a founding member of DECE -- but a good sign for anyone shoring up a collection of discs with UV digital content. CinemaNow identified compatible content with an Ultraviolet icon (seen above), while the service continues to gradually upgrade its SD content to big-screen friendly full HD. According to some early users, there's some teething issues with links to UV versions, however, suggesting CinemaNow's still tweaking the setup.

Singer Bjork's vocal cord surgery successful

LONDON (AP) ? Icelandic singer Bjork says she has had successful surgery to remove a vocal cord polyp.

The eccentric 47-year-old singer says on her official website that she had been trying to tackle the problem with exercises and diets since doctors first discovered the polyp, a benign growth on either one or both of the vocal cords, several years ago.

Bjork said that she decided to undergo laser surgery and it has worked, though she had to stay quiet for three weeks.

She wrote: "Surgery rocks! ... It's been very satisfying to sing all them clear notes again."

The singer apologized for cancelling various shows earlier this year, and that she looked forward to singing for her fans next year.

Last year Adele had minor surgery to remove a benign polyp.

EU calls on Egypt to respect democratic process

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union on Friday called on Egypt's President Mohamed Mursi to respect the democratic process in his country after he issued a decree exempting all his decisions from legal challenge until a new parliament is elected.

"It is of utmost importance that (the) democratic process be completed in accordance with the commitments undertaken by the Egyptian leadership," a spokesman for EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton said in a statement.

These commitments included "the separation of powers, the independence of justice, the protection of fundamental freedoms and the holding of democratic parliamentary elections as soon as possible", he said.

Mursi's decree on Thursday also shielded from legal challenge an Islamist-dominated assembly writing Egypt's new constitution, as well as the upper house of parliament, which is dominated by Islamists allied to Mursi.

Mursi's aides said the move, which also gave the president new powers that allowed him to sack the Mubarak-era prosecutor general and appoint a new one, was to speed up the country's protracted transition that has been hindered by legal obstacles.

But the declaration raised fears among secular-minded Egyptians that the Muslim Brotherhood, where Mursi has his roots, and the group's allies aim to dominate the new Egypt.

Europe wants to keep Egypt as an ally of the West after the collapse of Mubarak's authoritarian rule last year.

The European Union is Egypt's biggest trading partner, accounting for more than 30 percent of the country's trade volume. EU-Egypt bilateral trade was worth $23 billion in 2011, its highest ever level.

Last week, the EU said it would provide Egypt with nearly 5 billion euros in loans and grants for 2012-2013. The funds will be provided by the European Commission, the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Mursi visited Brussels in September for talks with EU leaders.

Black Friday creeps into Thursday

Put down that turkey leg. It's time to shop. No, really.

Stores typically open in the wee hours of the morning on the day after Thanksgiving known as Black Friday, named for the period when stores traditionally turn a profit for the year. But Black Friday openings have crept earlier and earlier over the past few years. Now, stores from Wal-Mart to Toys R Us are opening their doors on Thanksgiving evening, hoping Americans will be willing to shop soon after they finish their pumpkin pie.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. will have early bird shopping specials at 8 p.m., two hours earlier than a year ago. Target Corp. is opening its doors at 9 p.m. on the holiday, three hours earlier than last year. Sears, which didn't open on Thanksgiving last year, is opening during from 8 p.m. and will stay open until 10 p.m. on Black Friday. And Toys R Us will be opening at 8 p.m., an hour earlier than last year.

It's an effort by stores to make shopping more convenient for Americans, who still face economic uncertainty. Many shoppers are worried about high unemployment and a package of tax increases and spending cuts known as the "fiscal cliff" that will take effect in January unless Congress passes a budget deal by then. At the same time, Americans have grown more comfortable shopping on websites such as Amazon.com, where they can get cheaper prices and buy from the comfort of their home or office cubicle.

That has put pressure on brick-and-mortar stores, who can make up to 40 percent of their annual revenue during the two-month holiday shopping season, to compete. That's becoming more difficult: the National Retail Federation, an industry trade group, estimates that overall sales in November and December will rise 4.1 percent this year to $586.1 billion, or about flat with last year's growth. But the online part of that is expected to rise 15 percent to $68.4 billion, according to Forrester Research.

Video: Score best Black Friday deals at Staples, Gap, more

As a result, brick-and-mortar retailers are trying everything they can to lure consumers into stores by making shopping as easy as possible. In addition to expanding their hours into Thanksgiving, many are offering free layaways and shipping, matching the cheaper prices of online rivals and updating their mobile shopping apps with more information.

"Every retailer wants to beat everyone else," said C. Britt Beemer, chairman of America's Research Group, a research firm based in Charleston, S.C. "Shoppers love it."

Retailers are hoping that the Thanksgiving openings will draw shoppers who prefer to head to stores after their turkey dinner rather than braving the crowds early the next morning. Overall, about 17 percent of shoppers plan to take advantage of Thanksgiving hours, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers-Goldman Sachs survey of 1,000 consumers conducted from Nov. 15 to Nov. 18. Last year, that figure was 16 percent. For Black Friday, traditionally the busiest shopping day of the year, 33 percent intend to shop that day, slightly down from 34 percent in 2011.

But not everyone likes the idea of Turkey Day shopping. Some retailers that are opening on Thanksgiving face criticism from workers who complain that the holiday should be a time for everyone to spend with their family.

A New York-based union-backed group of retail workers called Retail Action Project is planning protests in the Manhattan borough of New York City on Thanksgiving in front of several stores, including AnnTaylor, Forever 21 and others that are opening at midnight on Black Friday and earlier.

"It shows that the companies are not valuing their workers. They're looking to their workers to squeeze out more profits," said Carrie Gleason, director of Retail Action Project.

Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, has been one of the biggest targets of protests against holiday hours. The issue is part of a broader campaign against the company's treatment of workers that's being waged by a union-backed group called OUR Walmart, which includes former and current workers. It's staging demonstrations and walkouts at hundreds of stores on Black Friday.

Video: $586 billion holiday shopping boost expected for economy

Mary Pat Tifft, a Wal-Mart employee in Kenosha, Wis., who is a member of OUR Walmart, started an online petition on signon.org that has about 34,000 signatures.

"This Thanksgiving, while millions of families plan to spend quality time with their loved ones, Wal-Mart associates have been told we will be stocking shelves and preparing sales starting at 8 p.m.," she wrote on the site.

But retailers say they are giving shoppers what they want. Dave Tovar, a Wal-Mart spokesman, said that the discounter learned from shoppers that they want to start shopping right after Thanksgiving dinner. Then, they want to have time to go to bed before they wake up to head back out to the stores.

Still, Tovar said that Wal-Mart works to accommodate its workers' requests for different working hours. "We spent a lot of time talking to them, trying to figure out when would be the best time for our events," he said.

Kathee Tesija, Target's executive vice president of merchandising, said Target's 9 p.m. opening struck "a perfect balance" for its customers. When asked whether it's faced any criticism from Target employees, she noted that the chain also works with workers to accommodate their needs. But, ultimately the company serves the customer.

"We thought long and hard about when the right opening time would be," she said, adding that Target "wants to make sure we are competitive."

Congo Violence: Tens Of Thousands Of Civilians Flee Goma (PHOTOS)

SAKE, Congo -- Congo's president has suspended the army's chief of staff, following the publication of a United Nations report which reveals that Gen. Gabriel Amisi oversaw a criminal network selling arms to rebels in the country's troubled east.

The firing of the general indicates that Congo is finally getting tough on its notoriously dysfunctional and internally divided army. It comes as an eight-month-old rebel group, made up of soldiers who defected from the army, pushed beyond Goma, the bustling regional capital of eastern Congo, which fell to the fighters earlier this week.

SCROLL DOWN FOR PHOTOS

On Friday, M23 rebels patrolled the town of Sake, the next town on the road south from Goma. They manned checkpoints, drank vodka in local bars and let the corpses of Congolese soldiers rot in the streets. One of the soldier's bodies bore an execution-style bullet wound to the temple.

The rebellion is led by soldiers who defected from the Congolese army. Before their recent defection, their commanders benefited from a privileged relationship with Congo's government, despite mounting evidence of their complicity in grave abuses. The leader of the M23 is believed to be Gen. Bosco Ntaganda, who is wanted for crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court.

Tens of thousands of civilians could be seen fleeing along a 10-kilometer (6-mile) stretch of the road to Goma, carrying mattresses and cooking pots on their heads, as well as live chickens, goats, and babies bundled on their backs. The town of Sake was nearly deserted. A lone father returned to his empty house. He had fled on Thursday when the shooting erupted, but lost track of his four children in the scramble to get out of town. The youngest are just 2 and 4 years old, he said.

"We heard shots from the hills," said Timothe Mashamba. "We fled, but now I have returned. I lost my four children when we fled and haven't found them. I am waiting for them here. I can't leave. They won't know where to find me."

The president of neighboring Uganda was acting as a go-between for the two sides, and on Friday, one of the leaders of M23, Bishop Jean-Marie Runiga was in Kampala, the Ugandan capital, for talks, said deputy rebel spokesman Amani Kabasha. Earlier in the week, both Congolese President Joseph Kabila, and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who is accused of arming the rebels, met in Uganda for an attempted mediation.

The two presidents agreed on certain principles and were now discussing them with M23, said the rebel spokesman.

"They (Kagame, Kabila) took decisions in Kampala and now they want to talk to Bishop Runiga about them. Joseph Kabila said in his communique that he would talk to us, and that is what we want," said the rebel spokesman.

Congo's troubled east has been plagued by decades of violence, and the latest rebellion is a reincarnation of a previous conflict. The rebel group that took Goma dubs itself the M23, a reference to the March 23, 2009 peace deal that paved the way for fighters from a now-defunct rebel group to join the army. Charging that the peace accord was not implemented, soldiers defected from the Congo army in April to form the M23. Both the M23 and the previous rebel group, known as the CNDP, are widely believed to be backed by neighboring Rwanda, which has fought two wars against its much-larger neighbor.

Numerous reports by the United Nations Group of Experts have shown the extent of Rwandan infiltration in the rebel groups based in Congo, as well as in Congo's armed forces, but it wasn't until the release of the most recent findings that Congo took decisive action.

A statement released by the Office of Congo's' President Joseph Kabila said that the U.N. report published on Nov. 21 made clear that Amisi's behavior was contrary to the rules of military behavior. "The President of the Republic has decided to suspend him immediately of all his functions, while an investigation is ongoing," the statement said.
