pain management - Great Ideas on How to Relieve Back Pain

If men and women have recently thrown out their backs and want to know how to relieve back pain, they may need to take their time in finding a workable solution. While some doctors may recommend complicated daily regimens that will loosen the muscles and gradually bring the area into tiptop shape, there are a number of treatments that are simpler in scope. Simply resting the back for a few days will allow it to regain some of its flexibility. In fact, experts often suggest that sleeping on a hard board instead of a soft mattress for a few nights can facilitate progress.

Icepacks are important in the first few hours after any kind of muscle injury. In some rarer cases, heat pads can be applied, but ice is the more acceptable medium. If individuals have been in a car accident and have suffered some degree of whiplash, they may have to treat the neck and back at the same time. Ice will keep the swelling to a minimum, which will ultimately help with the pain in the days ahead. Pharmacies usually sell icepacks that are protected with an outer covering, which will prevent the skin itself from growing too cold.

Sufferers might also try seeing a chiropractor. These professionals usually have a knack for increasing flexibility and healing sprains and strains. In fact, men and women with spinal misalignments often go to chiropractors to have work performed on the vertebrae. Patients should schedule their appointments ahead of time. If the pain is quite severe, then they may need to visit the office several times before they find a permanent solution to the problem. Chiropractors might also be able to recommend certain physical exercises that can be done to make the back stronger. While crunches and sit-ups are widely popular, there are other activities that are better at working more localized muscle groups.

In learning how to relieve back pain, men and women might also turn to strength training to tone their muscles and make them stronger. Many fitness centers and gyms have various machines for just this kind of training. The best fitness centers will even have some tutorials on how to work specific muscles groups while using a certain machine. Rowing devices are particularly good for the back area. As long as people try to make their muscles more flexible in the long run, they should end up with less of a chance of getting injured. Even if they are currently suffering from back pain, they can still use weight machines in a controlled and effective manner.

Space shuttle Enterprise arrives at New York's Intrepid museum (+video)

NASA awarded Enterprise to the Intrepid in April 2011. At the same time, the space agency assigned the museum homes for its space-flown orbiters.

The prototype shuttle, which did not fly in space but was used for atmospheric test flights, is scheduled to arrive at the Intrepid museum at roughly 12:30 p.m. EDT (1630 GMT). The prototype orbiter will then be?craned onto the Intrepid's flight deck?by 4 p.m. EDT (2000 GMT), according to museum officials. The Intrepid, which is docked on Manhattan's west side, is a retired World War II aircraft carrier that is now used to house aerospace exhibits.

Earlier this week, Enterprise was moved to a port in Jersey City, where it was transferred onto a crane-equipped barge to prepare it to be hoisted onto the Intrepid. Enterprise touched down in New York at John F. Kennedy International Airport in late April atop of a NASA jumbo jet.

The first half of the shuttle's river ride, which took it past Coney Island in Brooklyn and Staten Island on Sunday (June 3), proceeded smoothly until a gust of wind pushed the orbiter into a railroad bridge abutment, leaving?Enterprise's right wing damaged. Intrepid officials said via Twitter that as of Tuesday, the shuttle had been repaired.

Following a one-day delay due to poor weather conditions, Enterprise is scheduled to depart the Jersey shore today at 10:15 a.m. EDT (1415 GMT). The shuttle is expected to pass by the Statue of Liberty 35 minutes later. [Gallery: Enterprise Sails to New Jersey]

At about 11:40 a.m. EDT (1540 GMT), Enterprise will float by the World Trade Center and then travel up the Hudson River to the Intrepid, which is located at Pier 86 in Manhattan.

"We expect good viewing locations to include the west side of Manhattan from Battery Park through the mid 40?s and on the Hudson [River] waterfront of NJ in Jersey City, Hoboken, and Weehawken," the Intrepid museum advised on its website.

Once alongside the converted aircraft carrier, a crane will hoist Enterprise onto the flight deck for its public display. The craning operation is expected to take approximately three hours to complete.

Work will then begin later this week to raise a steel and fabric shelter over the?space shuttle Enterprise?to protect it while on exhibit. The Intrepid's "Space Shuttle Pavilion" will open to visitors on July 19.

NASA awarded Enterprise to the Intrepid in April 2011. At the same time, the space agency assigned the museum homes for its space-flown orbiters. Enterprise was moved to New York after it was displaced by shuttle Discovery at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in northern Virginia.

LG 55LM9600

Picture quality is arguably the most important aspect of an HDTV. A set can be well designed, it can have tons of features, it can be easy to use, but if the picture isn't very good, it isn't worth it. The LG 55LM9600 stuffs loads of goodies including passive 3D and built-in Wi-Fi into its attractive metal frame, but a mediocre picture makes this $3,599.99 (list) 55-inch LED-backlit LCD HDTV an overpriced set that skimps where it counts.

Design
The screen itself looks very striking, with a single pane of glass stretching nearly edge to edge, framed by a millimeter-wide silver metallic bezel connected to a metal frame. The stand is also metal, and lets the screen pivot left and right. A row of basic controls including Power, Menu, Input, Channel Up/Down, and Volume Up/Down sit behind the right side of the screen. Four HDMI and three USB ports occupy the left side of the back of the HDTV facing left, and the component, composite, cable, Ethernet, and VGA ports sit facing down.

Like previous LG HDTVs, the 55LM9800 uses LG's motion control remote to manipulate an on-screen cursor like an air mouse.?Waving the remote moves the cursor across the HDTV's Smart Hub and through various menus and services. The curved, wand-shaped remote has only a few buttons for Home, Back, 3D, Menu, Mute, Channel Up/Down, and Volume Up/Down. Everything is centered on the scroll wheel which doubles as a button by clicking it like a mouse, but it's easy to accidentally turn the scroll wheel instead of clicking it, which makes the TV think you're trying to change channels instead of selecting an option in a menu. If you don't want to use the motion controls, the scroll wheel is surrounded by a directional pad. However, if you move the remote around too much, it picks up the motion as a command to move the cursor and overrides the direction pad.

All online features are accessible through the Smart Hub, a main menu for the different streaming media services and apps you can access online either through the 55LM9600's ?built-in Wi-Fi or through an Ethernet connection. The usual services are available, like Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, and Pandora, along with social network apps for Facebook and Twitter and various specialized apps available for download.

Performance
We test HDTVs using a Konica-Minolta CS-200 chromameter, DisplayMate image software, and Spectracal CalMAN calibration software. After basic brightness and contrast calibration, the 55LM9600 showed a peak white level of 162.26 cd/m2 and a black level of 0.03 cd/m2 for a contrast ratio of 5,409:1. This is a modest performance; the screen doesn't get particularly dark, and shows a slightly lower contrast ratio than the LG 55LM6700's?($2,299.99, 4 stars)?8,556:1. Colors were generally accurate, with green and red channels appearing slightly oversaturated. The chart below shows how the HDTV's measurements (the colored dots) compare to the CIE standard levels (the respective squares).

Picture quality is disappointing, especially for a $3,600 HDTV. I watched Piranha on Blu-ray, and the middling contrast ratio resulted in shadow details like seaweed and dark rooms getting swallowed by murk. Jerry O'Connell's character's frenzied face was a suitably bright red thanks to the screen's color performance, but the adjacent piles of cocaine didn't quite "pop" because the screen doesn't get particularly bright. The less expensive 55LM6700??has a much better picture, getting much brighter and showing better shadow detail.

The 55LM9600 uses passive 3D, which means it works with inexpensive 3D glasses with passive lenses. It comes with six pairs of glasses, and you can easily get more pairs from movie theaters or online at as little as a few dollars a pair. Unfortunately, the 3D effect is unimpressive. While slight depth is visible, the 3D picture doesn't quite pop out of the screen, and significant crosstalk appears when viewing the screen from any angle other than straight on. I watched 3D demo videos of the PlayStation 3 games Gran Turismo 5 and Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception and 3D footage from NCAA basketball and the Winter X Games, and none of them showed truly immersive depth. The active 3D Samsung UN46ES8000F ($2,999.99, 3.5 stars) showed better 3D picture quality and comes with four pairs of active 3D glasses.

As far as power consumption, without energy saving settings enabled, the 55LM9600 used 99 watts. With energy saving set to "Low," that number dropped to 89 watts. Setting energy efficiency settings any higher than "Low" resulted in the screen dimming too much to be watchable. In contrast, the lower-end 55LM6700 consumed only 48 watts in our tests without getting too dark.

The LG 55LM9600 is one of the most attractively designed HDTVs we've seen this year, but its high price and middling picture quality make it a much less appealing screen than both similarly priced and much less expensive HDTVs. The Samsung UN46ES8000F ?stuffs more interface gimmicks like voice and gesture control, two more convenient remote controls than the 55LM9600's remote, and better 3D for less than $200 more. Our Editor's Choice budget HDTV, the 55-inch Vizio M3D550KD ($1,999.99, 4 stars), offers a solid picture and the convenience of passive 3D at a fraction of the price of either screen. Unless you want to pay much more money for a pretty frame the 55LM9600 doesn't earn its price tag.

(AP) ? The IOC says Rio de Janeiro is making "great strides" in preparations for the 2016 Olympics but warns of tight deadlines and a considerable increase in the amount of work after the London Game.

The IOC coordination commission ended its annual three-day visit on Wednesday, saying Rio officials and local organizers must be prepared to take center stage after Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes receives the Olympic flag in 67 days in London.

Coordination commission leader Nawal El Moutawakel says ensuring the venues are ready is the priority, focusing on the construction of Olympic Park and the Deodoro area. It includes 18 competition venues, the main press center and the International Broadcast Center.

(AP) ? A CIA drone strike Monday targeted al-Qaida's second in command, Abu Yahia al-Libi, in Pakistan, but it was unclear whether he was among those hit, U.S. officials said.

U.S. officials say fewer than five people were hit, although Pakistani officials say more than a dozen people were killed in two days of strikes in Pakistan. The CIA has carried out a half-dozen strikes in less than two weeks, as the U.S. pushes ahead with the controversial drone program despite Pakistani demands that it stop. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the classified drone program.

U.S. officials said they did not know yet whether al-Libi was among those killed, but said they were "optimistic."

Al-Libi would be the latest in the dozen-plus senior commanders removed in the clandestine U.S. war against al-Qaida since Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden last year.

The White House maintains a list of terrorist targets to be killed or captured, compiled by the military and the CIA and ultimately approved by the president.

The State Department's Rewards for Justice program had set a $1 million reward for information leading to the Libyan-born fugitive, who had filmed numerous propaganda videos urging attacks on U.S. targets after he escaped a prison at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan in 2005.

Al-Libi took the second-in-command spot when Egyptian-born Ayman al-Zawahri took charge of al-Qaida after bin Laden's death. As al-Qaida's de facto general manager, al-Libi is responsible for running the group's day-to-day operations in Pakistan's tribal areas and manages outreach to al-Qaida's regional affiliates.

"This is one of the more prominent names" among the targets of drone strikes in Pakistan, which helps bolsters the CIA's push to continue the drone program despite the continued political resistance from Pakistan and collateral damage, added former CIA officer Paul Pillar.

Al-Libi's death would be "another reason not to accept Pakistan's demand for an end to drone wars," added Brookings Institute's Bruce Riedel, a former CIA officer and adviser to the White House on Afghanistan and Pakistan policy.

North Korea's Military 'Targets' Media Outlets in the South

SEOUL -? South Korea's government is chiding the North for a specific threat made by its military against some of the media in Seoul.

North Korea's military Monday threatened South Korea's major conservative media outlets, saying its soldiers had entered the latitude and longitude coordinates of their Seoul headquarters for possible attack.

South Korean reports say it is unprecedented for North Korea to publicly speak of map coordinates for specific targets.

This came in an ?open ultimatum? by the general command staff of the (North) Korean People's Army.

The message read by an announcer on Pyongyang radio and attributed to the North Korean army general staff, targets South Korean media for critical reports about recent children's festivals hailing new leader Kim Jong Un.

The broadcast says the military has already targeted for punishment specific South Korean media outlets which it names. The announcer says such ?fools, idiots and blockheads? will face retribution for criticizing the celebrations in the North.

One television channel in Seoul had compared the ceremonies to those of the Hitler Youth of Nazi-era Germany.

South Korea's Unification Ministry spokesman Kim Hyung-suk says it takes the threat seriously and calls North Korea's reaction way out of line.

Kim says the new military threat from Pyongyang is a significant challenge and provocation to freedom and democracy.

However, Yim Tae-hee - a former chief of staff to the current South Korean president, Lee Myung-bak - says Seoul should not over-react.

Speaking to correspondents, Yim - a declared presidential candidate of the ruling New Frontier Party - pleads for all to step back and put things in perspective. He says literally interpreting such threats could cause an erroneous move by Seoul in regards to relations with the North.

The two Koreas have no diplomatic ties. They have lived side-by-side for decades under an uneasy truce since their devastating three-year civil war in the early 1950's.

The South Korean capital, Seoul, with more than ten million people, is in the range of North Korean artillery.

Professor Ryu Gil-jae at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul says a ?cyber? attack against the South Korean media is more probable than a military action.

Ryu says a competition is underway in North Korea among various entities to demonstrate their loyalty to Kim Jong Un and such belligerent rhetoric directed at the South is one part of this.

Two provocations blamed on the North in 2010 - the sinking of a South Korean military ship and the shelling of a small island - killed 50 South Koreans, mainly military personnel. The South Korean government has warned there will be retaliation by its forces if there are any additional attacks by the North.

Why Small Businesses Aren't Using the Health Insurance Tax Credit

The White House estimates that only a small minority of companies thought to be eligible for the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit made use of it in fiscal 2011, according to a report released by the Small Business Majority and Families USA.? The immediate question then becomes, why would these businesses voluntarily forgo a tax provision meant to help them, asks Scott Shane, the A. Malachi Mixon III Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies at Case Western Reserve University.

John Arensmeyer, founder and CEO of the Small Business Majority, argues that there is a lack of participation due to a lack of awareness -- that is, small business owners simply don't know about the credit.? However, surveys of relevant parties suggest that this isn't the case.

  • A report from the Treasury Department's inspector general explains that the IRS has tried hard to educate small business owners and tax professionals about the tax credit.
  • A survey of more than 300 small business owners undertaken by the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council a year ago showed that most business owners knew of the credit, with only 20 percent saying that they were unaware of the tax benefit.
  • A majority (51 percent) of respondents said that while they knew about the credit, they were not taking advantage of it because either "their business was not eligible," the credit was "too small" or offered "no real benefit," or the credit was "too complex."

These surveys suggest that though many businesses are ineligible for the tax credit, even those that are elect not to pursue it.? Further analysis of the financial decisions involved suggests that this decision is a well-informed one.

  • The average credit is $800 per employee, the Small Business Majority and Families USA reports.
  • However, analysis by the Kaiser Family Foundation shows that the average premium for health insurance at a small business in 2011 was $5,328 for single employees and $14,098 for family coverage.
  • Since an employer needs to pay for half the premium to get the credit, that means incurring a cost of $2,664 for employee-only coverage in return for a credit of $800.
  • Moreover, the credit only lasts for six years, while the cost of insurance will continue indefinitely, and is likely to increase, given historical trends.

What Things To Do For Home Improvement ? Yapperz - Speak out ...

Have you thought about sprucing up the look of your home? These hints can help you think about what renovations you want to do.

Safety is the most important thing to consider on a home improvement job. If working in your kitchen or anywhere else where gas may be present, turn off the gas for the duration. Doing any home improvement around gas can be dangerous. Be sure that you are aware of the location of the shutoff valve! Consequently, the gas lines should be located to avoid accidental damage.

Having problems with cold drafts or hot winds in your home? On the market these days are quite a few products that actually use air as an insulator. Yup, air! This kind of insulation is not unlike the bubble wrap used to pack products for shipping. For example, there are products that allow air to be pumped into small plastic cushions which are then installed into your ceilings and walls. You can cheaply re-insulate your home using this method.

Periodically clean the exterior of your home with a hose or pressure washer and detergent that is specifically intended for your siding type. It costs very little to rent a pressure washer, and they work wonders when it comes to removing built up grime from the home. Use caution with the windows and roof. You want to avoid knocking anything loose!

If you need to make changes to your kitchen, why not clean or organize your pantry differently? Remove any items that are out-dated or no longer often used like expired canned goods and old spices. Wipe down all shelves and put down
r paper. Then, organize the shelves, putting like products together. This way, you won't need to search. You'll know exactly where to look!

If you have a wood deck, you need to look for a few things in order to know when it must be repaired. Search for uneven surfaces or imperfections in the wood, as well as faulty nails or loose screws.

Install a pergola to give your house some character. Pergolas have become quite popular in recent years and can add shade and ambiance to the front of a home. Installing a pergola can be done in a weekend if you have some friends that can help you set it up.

You need to give a thought to the context of your neighborhood before you engage in extensive remodeling work. An overly modern home would appear at odds with its arts-and-crafts-style bungalow neighbors. If your remodel blends in with the other homes, your chances will be greater of selling your home in the future.

Before you purchase new hardwood floors, have a professional investigate your current floors. Sometimes, people find that they have hardwood under their linoleum or carpet that just needs to be refinished. The result will be a high quality, nicer looking floor with less expense.

If you have long blind cords or looped cords, cut them or tie them up. Young kids and pets could choke of the ends of these cords. Leave an adequate amount of cord so that it is still functional and nothing more. Either tie it or cut it, or else an accident might occur in the future.

Home improvement is not as complicated as it is made out to be. There are times when it is quite a bit of work, but not everything has to be. Some home improvement jobs are simple and easy. Are you ready to get started?

Looming court ruling worries some with health woes

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Texan Sam Lovett had no health insurance in August 2010 when an emergency hospital stay brought the news from his doctors that his liver was failing and he could die within less than a year without a transplant.

The small distribution center where he worked did not provide health insurance. Lovett, 43, who lives near Comfort, Texas, was not able to buy private coverage on his own because of his already bad health. Though he had the resources to cover routine medical bills, he now needed a $400,000 organ transplant and no doctor or clinic would take him without insurance.

"They were making arrangements to send me to a hospice. One doctor flatly told me that I had a better chance of leaving the hospital dead than alive," said Lovett, who had a history of alcoholism and obesity.

But in the months that followed, Lovett was able to enroll in the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP). The program was created by the healthcare law that President Barack Obama, a Democrat, signed in March 2010 despite the united opposition of Republicans in Congress. The program paid for Lovett's transplant surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix last December.

PCIP is a temporary government program set up to run until 2014, when the Obama healthcare law is due to take full effect and prevent insurance companies from the common practice of denying people coverage due to pre-existing medical conditions. About 60,000 Americans already are receiving medical coverage through the program, according to the Obama administration.

As the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to rule in the next few weeks on whether to overturn the law considered to be Obama's signature domestic policy achievement, Lovett said the choice is very clear for him and others unable to get insurance without the statute's provisions.

"Without this, you're going to die," Lovett said in an interview arranged by the Consumers Union organization, which supports the law. "From my perspective, that's what the Supreme Court will sanction, or not - whether people will be allowed to die because they can't get insurance."

Unlike people in many other rich nations where health insurance is near universal, many Americans struggle without medical coverage even as the country pays more for healthcare than anywhere else in the world. The U.S. healthcare system is a patchwork of private insurance and restrictive government programs that has left tens of millions uninsured.

Many Americans receive health insurance only because their employers provide it as a job benefit. But some companies, particularly smaller employers, do not offer it. People with pre-existing medical conditions often are denied private coverage when they try to buy it on their own.

The Obama law represented the $2.6 trillion U.S. healthcare system's biggest overhaul in nearly 50 years. Twenty-six of the 50 U.S. states - including Lovett's home state of Texas - and a small business trade group challenged the law in court.

The Supreme Court heard three days of historic arguments in March on the fate of the law. A ruling is expected by the end of June.

PCIP is only one facet of a law intended to extend coverage to more than 30 million more Americans, create competitive health insurance exchanges in all 50 states and find new ways to deliver effective healthcare at lower costs.

Opponents of the law say it represents an encroachment by the federal government on the individual right to choose healthcare, meddles in the business of the states, and would saddle consumers with higher costs and less access to care.

Should the high court overturn the law, its provisions could become invalid immediately.

'START OVER'

Although conservatives revile the law, Republicans and other critics agree something should be done to give insurance access to people with pre-existing conditions and other health issues. Several Republican bills in Congress would create new insurance pools for extending affordable coverage.

"We need to get rid of the entire thing and start over with a very deliberative process," said Sean Spicer, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee. "There's bipartisan recognition that these are valid concerns that need to be addressed. But we need to do it in a way that doesn't put government in the middle of healthcare."

Mitt Romney, Obama's Republican challenger in the November 6 U.S. election, has called for repealing the law.

If the whole law or key provisions are struck down, it may be tough to get any alternatives through a Congress in partisan gridlock even after the election. Republicans currently control the House of Representatives and Obama's fellow Democrats the Senate.

Republican lawmakers are working on an alternative healthcare agenda should the law be struck down. They may seek to reinstate some of its more popular consumer protections such as a provision, already in effect, that lets young adults remain under their parents' health insurance plans to age 26.

But the uninsured or uninsurable could wait months or years for an alternative plan to help them. Meanwhile, many people without insurance fear that a major illness could lead to astronomical healthcare bills and doom them to bankruptcy.

Statistics show that as many as one in four working-age American adults go without health insurance in a given year, often due to unemployment and other job changes.

Helen Berger of Boise, Idaho, said she has not seen a doctor since her husband, Russ, lost his information technology job 10 months ago.

They had the option of paying to continue to get his former employer's insurance plan under a U.S. law known as COBRA. But the $1,350 monthly premium was way more than they could afford on his $336-a-week government unemployment check.

Her 2-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter are eligible for a government health assistance program for children. The family also qualifies for $400 a month in food stamps.

Joining the state-federal Medicaid program for the poor would mean giving up assets including their home, she said. So Helen, 55, and Russ Berger, 57, are going without coverage until he can find another job or a charitable health clinic.

"We're going in the hole (financially) every month without having to pay any health insurance. And now we're coming up on a year being on unemployment (benefits), not knowing if that will continue," Helen Berger said in an interview arranged by the advocacy group Families USA, which supports the law.

Because information technology specialists like her husband often land jobs as outside contractors without health benefits, Berger said a return to employment likely would mean they would have to buy their own insurance. She said she hopes affordable medical coverage will become available once the state insurance exchanges are launched as scheduled under the Obama law in 2014.

"If anything happens between now and then, we're kind of in a bad place," she said.

Her state, Idaho, also is among those challenging the law.

'I'LL BELIEVE IT WHEN I SEE IT'

Gail Richardson of Stone Mountain, Georgia, said she is skeptical the law will help her, but hopes to qualify for its expanded Medicaid eligibility, which also would begin in 2014.

"I just found out about it and was really happy. I used to think it would benefit a lot of people but not me," she said. "But I still say I'll believe it when I see it."

Richardson, a 59-year-old freelance writer, has autoimmune liver disease and psoriatic arthritis. With an annual income of about $11,000, she said she cannot afford to join the PCIP program that paid for Lovett's liver transplant.

That's because the law requires PCIP coverage to be priced in line with plans for healthy customers in each state. In Georgia, the standard PCIP plan for someone her age costs $470 a month in premiums and can lead to out-of-pocket expenses such as deductibles and co-pays of $5,950 to $7,000.

Richardson is not eligible for Medicaid in Georgia, which is available in the state to adults without children only if they are elderly, disabled, blind, pregnant or suffering from certain forms of cancer. She gets much of her medical needs at discounted prices, or for free from assistance programs offered by drug companies and a supermarket pharmacy chain.

"I pay about $54 for three months' worth of one prescription and get the other two free. My doctor does blood work every six months and charges about $78 per visit, which I repay in monthly installments," Richardson said in an interview arranged by Consumers Union. "You can see how that's dwarfed by the expense of premiums I couldn't possibly afford."

The Obama law would expand Medicaid to cover people with annual incomes of up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level, or about $15,000.

"I'd have peace of mind, knowing that if something serious happened to me, I'd be able to get care," she said.

Her state also was among those challenging the law, including the Medicaid expansion.

Jeremy Scahill Says Obama Strikes In Yemen Constitute 'Murder'

Weighing in on President Obama's targeted drone strikes in the Middle East, journalist Jeremy Scahill did not mince words.

During his appearance on MSNBC's "Up With Chris Hayes" Saturday morning, Scahill repeatedly said that such attacks, when they killed innocent civilians, amounted to "murder."

Asked by Hayes why he would use such a "loaded" word to describe the strikes, Scahill responded at length.

"If someone goes into a shopping mall in pursuit of one of their enemies and opens fire on a crowd of people and guns down a bunch of innocent people in a shopping mall, they've murdered those people. When the Obama administration sets a policy where patterns of life are enough of a green light to drop missiles on people or to send in AC130s to spray them down..."

"But that wasn't the case here," interrupted retired colonel Jack Jacobs. "You're talking about a targeted person here." Scahill continued:

"If you go to the village of Al-Majalah in Yemen, where I was, and you see the unexploded clusterbombs and you have the list and photographic evidence, as I do--the women and children that represented the vast majority of the deaths in this first strike that Obama authorized on Yemen--those people were murdered by President Obama, on his orders, because there was believed to be someone from Al Qaeda in that area. There's only one person that's been identified that had any connection to Al Qaeda there. And 21 women and 14 children were killed in that strike and the U.S. tried to cover it up, and say it was a Yemeni strike, and we know from the Wikileaks cables that David Petraeus conspired with the president of Yemen to lie to the world about who did that bombing. It's murder--it's mass murder--when you say, 'We are going to bomb this area' because we believe a terrorist is there, and you know that women and children are in the area. The United States has an obligation to not bomb that area if they believe that women and children are there. I'm sorry, that's murder."

Scahill is the national security correspondent for The Nation, and the author of the book "Blackwater: The World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army."

He was part of a panel discussion that centered around a lengthy New York Times article published on Tuesday, which disclosed that the Obama administration maintains a "kill list" of wanted terrorists. Obama personally signs off on the killing-by-drone of many suspects, taking into account the circumstances of a possible attack, including possible civilian casualties.

The article says that Obama tries to avoid any loss of innocent life, but that he considers any male in the area a combatant. Civilian deaths in drone attacks have become a flashpoint in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Yemen.

A Lowdown on Energizer Battery Chargers

Among the most-preferred products when it comes to automotive battery charging are Energizer battery chargers. People can enjoy numerous advantages when using these chargers, as they are of high quality and present many good features. Purchasing battery chargers from Energizer can make you eliminate a lot of problems related to the charging of batteries.

Automotive Energizer battery chargers are specially designed to recharge the batteries of your cars, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), boats, and motorcycles. One of the best features of these automotive chargers is they have 3-levels for charging batteries. It has a fast-level for speedy charging and this is usually used for charging the batteries of cars and marine vehicles. The medium and slow charging levels, on the other hand, are perfect for charging batteries of simpler vehicles and machines, such as ATVs, lawn tractors, and snowmobiles.

Battery chargers by Energizer can easily adjust to the battery condition while charging, so users do not have to worry about the battery getting overcharged.

When using other battery chargers, people usually have to stay with the battery until they get fully charged, because they worry about the batteries overheating and getting ruined when overcharged. The good thing about the battery chargers by Energizer is that they can slow down the charge rate when the battery is about to get fully charged. They also stop providing the battery with energy once it gets full.

Energizer also offers its customers a battery maintainer along with the charger. The battery maintainer allows the percentage of the battery charge to remain even when it is stored. Some people may not be aware that batteries lose the charge gradually when they stored and not used. They think that it will always have the amount of charge that they had during their last battery recharge. Batteries must always be used after every recharge, as this may not only result to batteries losing their charge, but they might also get sulfated. The battery will get damaged and would no longer be available for use.

Battery chargers w/ maintainers sold by Energizer are also very easy to operate. The chargers are small and lightweight and users would not find it difficult to transport them from one place to another. There are indicators on the charger that let you know how much power the battery has gained. They also come with a switch-mode power that lets you switch the function of the device from charger to maintainer and vice-versa. In addition to these, the device comes with several output cords and battery clamps. Most importantly, Energizer offers a 1-year warranty for their products, guaranteeing its customers of being able to use the chargers w/ maintainers for a long time.

Energizer battery chargers are truly worth buying, as they make the recharging of automotive batteries very easy. You can be sure that the batteries would not get damage because of overcharging with the battery chargers by Energizer. The best thing about it is you may get a battery charger and a battery maintainer just for the price of one.

BOND's New Spring Menu | BeantownEats {We Eat It. You Read It ...

Grandeur with timeless elegance. This bank turned upscale cocktail bar breathes with its history and a touch of romance. Showing off its Financial District power with large abstract money bills displayed in windows, Bond at The Langham Hotel will be sure to impress.

Where: The Langham Hotel, located at 250 Franklin Street in the Financial District

What: More than simply a bar within a hotel, Bond?s sprawling space boasts vaulted ceilings and over-sized chandeliers. The bar back drop is a simple yet visually stunning display of bottles, presumably vodka, which makes one crave a martini, shaken not stirred.

Atmosphere: Bond can wear many masks depending on your mood and time of day. Its Financial District address makes it an obvious choice for after work drinks with friends and co-workers. Arrive a little later on a Wednesday night and be serenaded by a two piece jazz band. Arrive even later and settle into a swanky low couch for an intimate date.

Cocktails: The cocktails are Bond cover the normal range from gin and vodka to whiskey and bourbon. For something light and refreshing, try the Sawbuck ($12) made with Grey Goose La Poire, Domaine de Canton, fresh lime juice and garnished with a basil leaf.

Bar Bites: From the Chef that brings Boston?s famous Chocolate Bar come a very nice selection of snacks, all suitable for grazing over drinks.

A sophisticated take on a classic, the chicken drummettes keep all of the flavor and fun of traditional wings but make them a little bit easier to eat. Make sure to try the candied ginger with the chicken to experience a small flavor explosion.

Sweet Soy and Ginger Chicken Wings ($10)

If you are just ordering appetizers and want to treat yourself, go for the lobster quesadilla. Four large pieces are stuffed with more than enough lobster meat to justify the price point.

Lobster and Chorizo Quesadilla with queso blanco and sweet corn ($20)

Fried calamari fans will find a delicious rendition at Bond: a light dressing of sweet chili gives these perfectly-cooked calamari rings a Pan-Asian flare that really works.

Crispy Point Judith Calamari with sweet chili, black sesame and cilantro ($14)

Bond takes a classic caprese salad to the next level with colorful heirloom tomatoes stuffed with a creamy stracchino (an Italian cow?s milk cheese).? The presentation might fool you, as the cheese in the tomatoes is barely visible, but creates a flavor unlike one I?ve ever had before.

Stracchino Cheese and Heirloom Tomatoes with virgin olive oil and balsamic ($12)

As the summer heat approaches, the Vietnamese spring rolls are light and full of flavor. A coating of crushed peanuts adds a little crunch while the small pieces if chicken add just enough sustenance while maintaining balance.

Vietnamese Fresh Rolls with shrimp, chicken and spicy peanut sauce ($14)

If you miss the Chocolate Bar during the spring and summer months, have no fear! You can still get very tasty desserts, some in the small-portion style of the Chocolate Bar, at Bond. The milk chocolate powder is something any chocolate lover has to try at least once; the sensation of the powder melting in your mouth seems to be work of some scientific magic.? The smoked chocolate cake was indeed very smoking, and even as a fan of Talisker 10 scotch, this cake was even too smokey for me.? Instead, try the toffee pudding; sweet but not overdone, and delicious.

Pictured right, from top to bottom: Strawberry Rhubarb Gratin with marscapone mousse, mint and black pepper sable ($9), Chocolate Tasting with smoked chocolate cake, milk chocolate powder, white chocolate brulee and guanaja ice cream ($12), Sticky Toffee Pudding with brown butter ice cream, Bookers whiskey caramel ($9)

There are lots of other small bite options on Bond?s menu, as well as dinner entrees for one with a hearty appetite.? No matter your choice of food and beverage, Bond delivers.

Do you have a go-to appetizer in the spring months?

Thank you to Bond and The Langham for inviting me to this spring menu tasting.? Food and drinks were complimentary however all opinions are my own.?

Skeleton key: Diverse complex networks have similar skeletons

ScienceDaily (June 1, 2012) ? Northwestern University researchers are the first to discover that very different complex networks -- ranging from global air traffic to neural networks -- share very similar backbones. By stripping each network down to its essential nodes and links, they found each network possesses a skeleton and these skeletons share common features, much like vertebrates do.

Mammals have evolved to look very different despite a common underlying structure (think of a human being and a bat), and now it appears real-world complex networks evolve in a similar way.

The researchers studied a variety of biological, technological and social networks and found that all these networks have evolved according to basic growth mechanisms. The findings could be particularly useful in understanding how something -- a disease, a rumor or information -- spreads across a network.

This surprising discovery -- that networks all have skeletons and that they are similar -- was published this week by the journal Nature Communications.

"Infectious diseases such as H1N1 and SARS spread in a similar way, and it turns out the network's skeleton played an important role in shaping the global spread," said Dirk Brockmann, senior author of the paper. "Now, with this new understanding and by looking at the skeleton, we should be able to use this knowledge in the future to predict how a new outbreak might spread."

Brockmann is associate professor of engineering sciences and applied mathematics at the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science and a member of the Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems (NICO).

Complex systems -- such as the Internet, Facebook, the power grid, human consciousness, even a termite colony -- generate complex behavior. A system's structure emerges locally; it is not designed or planned. Components of a network work together, interacting and influencing each other, driving the network's evolution.

For years, researchers have been trying to determine if different networks from different disciplines have hidden core structures -- backbones -- and, if so, what they look like. Extracting meaningful structural features from data is one of the most challenging tasks in network theory.

Brockmann and two of his graduate students, Christian Thiemann and first author Daniel Grady, developed a method to identify a network's hidden core structure and showed that the skeletons possess some underlying and universal features.

The networks they studied differed in size (from hundreds of nodes to thousands) and in connectivity (some were sparsely connected, others dense) but a simple and similar core skeleton was found in each one.

"The key to our approach was asking what network elements are important from each node's perspective," Brockmann said. "What links are most important to each node, and what is the consensus among nodes? Interestingly, we found that an unexpected degree of consensus exists among all nodes in a network. Nodes either agree that a link is important or they agree that it isn't. There is nearly no disagreement."

By computing this consensus -- the overall strength, or importance, of each link in the network -- the researchers were able to produce a skeleton for each network consisting of all those links that every node considers important. And these skeletons are similar across networks.

Because of this "consensus" property, the researchers' method does not have the drawbacks of other methods, which have degrees of arbitrariness in them and depend on parameters. The Northwestern approach is very robust and identifies essential hubs and links in a non-arbitrary universal way.

The Volkswagen Foundation supported the research.

Horse Hearers Know Who's Talking

60-Second Science60-Second Science | More Science

When horses heard a familiar person's voice from a loudspeaker they preferentially looked at that person versus a stranger. Amy Kraft reports.

More 60-Second Science

?Say Wilbur, get a load of this story.? If you grew up in the sixties, you probably recognize the voice of Mr. Ed, TV?s talking horse. And it turns out, he might recognize your voice, too. A new study shows that even non-talking horses can tell individual people apart based on the sound of their voice.

Researchers put 32 horses in front of a familiar trainer and a new person. When the horses heard their trainer?s voice coming from a loudspeaker, they looked at their trainer almost exclusively. When the stranger?s voice was heard, they were about equally likely to look at either person.?

Another test used 10 trainers the horses were familiar with. And when the animals heard a voice, they looked at the correct person faster and concentrated on that person much more than any of the other choices. The study appears in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B. [Leanne Proops and Karen McComb, Cross-modal individual recognition in domestic horses (Equus caballus) extends to familiar humans]

Researchers think the ability to recognize individual handlers might be rooted in the relationships the steeds have with their conspecific NEIGHHHHbors. I mean, neighbors.
