Satanists planning rally for Florida Gov. Rick Scott

Florida Gov. Rick Scott has some unexpected, and likely unwanted, new support (Logo from Satanic Temple website/Scott??

Florida Gov. Rick Scott may have earned himself a new constituency, but the devil is in the details.

Local news site WPBF.com reported that a group of Satanists plans to hold a rally outside Scott's office on Jan. 25 to support the governor?s signing of a bill that allows students to pray at school events.

"We've gotten such a response, it's just impossible for me to know what that translates into," Satanic Temple spokesman Lucien Greaves told WPBF, regarding how many will show up at the rally.

?You don?t build up your membership unless people know about you,? Greaves said in a separate interview with the Palm Beach Post. ?So this allows us to get our message out in public. We?re hoping it will reduce the stigmatism.?

The Satanic Temple was launched in 2012 with what Greaves described as being ?more or less an online community.?

The group?s website describes itself as being different from other, better-known Satanic organizations. Greaves said the rally is part of a larger ongoing effort at making the group?s beliefs more commonplace in mainstream discussions of religion and belief. From the website:

?Though we have far to go before public education leads to a mainstream embrace of our Satanic religion, we feel that our own public ?coming out? will go a long way toward raising the consciousness of the populace ? and the social environment has never yet been better prepared for the welcoming of a new Satanic era.?

The group?s founder, Neil Bricke, is scheduled to speak at the rally.

"We feel it's time for Satanists to come out and say exactly who we are," Greaves said.

So, what does Scott think of the newly organized support?

"This is a great country. Everyone has a voice," Gov. Scott's press secretary wrote in an email to ABCNews.com.

Using Ecological Assessments to Set Meaningful Goals for ABA ...

When professionals develop ABA intervention programs for students with ASD and other disabilities, they use many different approaches when selecting goals.? Some use criterion-referenced assessment tools such as the Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills- Revised (The ABLLS-R) or The Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP) to set intervention goals.? Others use informal assessment procedures such as interviews with students, caregivers, and teachers, checklists, and informal observations to set goals for ABA interventions.? What professionals do not typically use nearly enough are ecological assessments to set goals for ABA interventions.

An ecological assessment begins with examining the skills needed for an individual to be successful in a specific environment (i.e. reading group in the general education classroom, school cafeteria, playground at recess, dinner table at home, restaurant, library, movie theater, workplace). ?Professionals use task analysis by listing all of the skills required for the selected environment, observing the student in the environment, and documenting which skills the student demonstrates and which skills the student does not.? Then goals are set based on the skills the student needs to be successful in the environment but does not currently display.? Of course, goals need to be developmentally appropriate.? Consider this situation: one of the skills on the task analysis for eating at a restaurant indicates that the student verbally tells the waitress what meal he would like. However, the student is non-verbal. Thus, the goal would need to be something such as pointing to a picture or description of the desired meal on a menu when the waitress asks what he would like.

Ecological assessments can be conducted to assess students? independence and present levels of participation so that meaningful goals can be set to teach the necessary communication, social, behavioral, cognitive skills, or daily living skills the student needs to maximize performance.? Below is an example of an ecological assessment of a student?s participation in small group reading with suggested goals that can be targeted for ABA interventions:

Make?Predictions	The?student did not make any predictions	Provide?the student with a communication board that has a symbol for ?I have an ? idea.?? This can be the words and/or a ? light bulb.? The student will hold up ? the symbol when she wants to make a prediction.? To make a prediction, she can use gestures,?choose from a set of pictures, or she can use an AAC device.

In the example above, the teacher can design ABA interventions for all of the goals listed or target them one at a time until the student is able to participate in reading group independently.? As you can see, using the ecological assessment approach allows professionals to set goals that have immediate relevance to the students and those they interact with across different environments.? Although specific social, communication, cognitive, daily living skills, and/or positive behaviors are addressed when writing goals, they are selected based on what the student needs to learn to increase independence and active participation in the environments in which they engage.

Teacher Sues School District After Officials Demand She Remove ...

A Christian high school teacher in Cheektowaga, N.Y., is suing her employer after district officials told her to take personal signs and religious items out of her classroom. Joelle Silver, a science educator who has been working in the?Cheektowaga Central School District for seven years, decided to take legal action after receiving a letter (read it here) asking her to?comply?with officials??request.

So, what are the contentious messages and items in the classroom that were seen by officials as being problematic, you ask? WIVB-TV explains:

Silver had four small posters in her room with psalm verses on them, a poster with a religious quotation from Ronald Reagan, a drawing that the district said is reference to the crucifixion, a poster that had a Bible verse superimposed on the American flag and school books, among other items. The letter Silver received instructed her to take the items down and warned that failing to do so could lead to serious disciplinary consequences.

Superintendent Kane, who says he respects Silver?s teaching abilities, says the materials were found to be inappropriate and the district determined they needed to be removed.

Silver is being represented by the?American Freedom Law Center, a group that handles religious liberty cases. The lawsuit, which has already been filed against the district, also names Board of Education President Brian J. Gould and Superintendent Dennis Kane.

Officials apparently became aware of the religious messages after a student complained to the Freedom From Religion Foundation, an atheist activist group devoted to church-state separatism. The group subsequently threatened to sue if proper action was not taken to address the matter.

?I believe that my First Amendment rights were violated last June when I was asked to do some things regarding taking some posters down and to censor my speech in the classroom,? Silver said of the actions that led her to file lawsuit. ?As a Christian and as an American I feel it?s incredibly important to fight to protect the rights that people have died to give them.?

The teacher also claims that she was told that participating in the school?s Bible study club was forbidden, as it would look as though the district endorsed her actions. She also had a prayer box that WIVB-TV reports was ordered removed from her classroom as well, as it was being used during the school day.

Gunmen shoot birdshot at Egypt protesters; 15 hurt

CAIRO (AP) ? A dozen masked attackers fired birdshot late Saturday at protesters who have camped outside Egypt's presidential palace in Cairo for the past month, wounding several along with security forces standing watch nearby, witnesses said. It was the latest in a series of shootings of protesters in Egypt.

Paramedic Mohammed Sultan put the total number of wounded in the attack at 15, including nine members of the security forces and six protesters.

The witnesses said attackers also threw Molotov cocktails at protesters' tents, setting some on fire. Footage on Egyptian TV stations showed more people coming to join the protests.

The sit-in was started Dec. 4 by opponents of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. They are demanding the annulment of Egypt's new Islamist-backed constitution. The document deeply polarized Egyptians but passed by a 64 percent "yes" vote in a referendum in which around 33 percent of voters participated. Critics called the process flawed.

The political conflict has been accompanied by street violence. At least 10 people died in clashes outside the palace on Dec. 5 that broke out when supporters of Morsi attacked the sit-in. Some were reportedly killed by gunfire.

On Dec. 31, gunmen shot and critically wounded a well-known activist at the site of another sit-in in downtown Cairo's Tahrir square. Police said they arrested a cafe owner who told them that he fired on the square after people manning makeshift checkpoints there searched his car and shot at him.

The current attack comes two weeks before the anniversary of the Jan. 25 start of the 2011 uprising that overthrew Mubarak. Activists opposed to Morsi are expected to organize large protests that day.

Earlier Saturday, a Cairo court ordered a religious TV program hosted by a fiery preacher off the air on charges of libeling and defaming a well-known actress, one of three legal reverses that day suffered by Islamists in cases related to the media.

The court ruled that the program "In The Scale" be suspended for 30 days following a lawsuit by Elham Chahine. A widely circulated video clip shows the program's host, Abdullah Badr, accusing Chahine of practicing "prostitution" and "teaching Egyptians how to strip naked, make love and commit adultery."

"Go ask God for forgiveness for your scandals," he says in the August interview. Chahine's lawyer said in court that the actress had been exposed to "insults, cursing and humiliation."

Last month, Badr was sentenced to a year in jail over the same charges. The program is aired on el-Hafiz TV, one of several networks associated with the ultraconservative Salafi Islamist movement.

In another case, a court dropped one of several lawsuits filed against popular satirist Bassem Youssef, known as Egypt's Jon Stewart. Youssef had been accused of "corrupting morals" and violating "religious principles" in his show, "The Program," in which he frequently mocks ultraconservative clerics and Islamists.

He still faces trial on March 9 on charges of insulting President Mohammed Morsi, a lawsuit that was leveled by lawyers associated with the Islamist group from which Morsi hails, the Muslim Brotherhood. This is one of many cases brought against media personalities who criticized the president. Morsi's office maintains that the president has nothing to do with the legal procedures against his critics.

In a separate court cast, a court ruled that Dream TV, a private liberal-leaning network that is sharply critical of the Brotherhood, could resume broadcasting. Egypt's Islamist minister of information Salah Abdel-Makksoud suspended it for an alleged zoning violation and broadcasting from outside an authorized area.

Neither Badr, Youssef nor Dream TV could immediately be reached for comment.

1. New technology allows developing nations to leapfrog over traditional growth patterns (M-PESA, long-range wi-fi).
2. The increasing move towards ?convenience models? may be pointing the US? tech sector away from innovation (Peter Thiel?s ?they promised us flying cars but instead we got 140 characters?).

In a recent working paper for the National Bureau of Economic Research, economist Robert J. Gordon writes that the US? current wave of innovation is less of a step forward and more of a lateral move, merely finding novel ways to use innovations made 20 years ago, sitting him squarely alongside Thiel. We've been covering telepresence robots for years, but those that have materialized aren't exactly within most people's budget. However, if all you need is some way to rotate your view on the other end of the line, then you may consider Revolve Robotics' KUBI. With six days left and just over $27,000 away from the $50,000 goal (the team was able to knock 50 percent off the original goal), this Indiegogo project hopes to offer a relatively affordable and simple telepresence solution for existing tablet users. The KUBI itself is essentially a tablet mount that can do a 300-degree pan plus 90-degree tilt, and the prototypes we saw featured two spring-loaded aluminium arms that elegantly pinches the tablet -- we've been told that they can even fit Microsoft's Surface in landscape. The robot is pretty much platform-agnostic as long as the tablet supports Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy, which is how the robot receives its motion commands.

Let's Talk About Sex Part I: Yes, It Starts at Birth

Bringing home a new baby is a mixture of unparalleled joy and equally intense stress. Bottle or breast, crib or co-sleep, cloth or disposable diapers, and so on.

The last thing on your mind is probably the sexuality of your tiny infant.

Many parents cringe at the mention of sex in relation to their children. We don?t want to think of our innocent children as sexual beings but they are, especially in relationship to how they perceive their own body.

Pleasure seeking (and pain avoidance) is one of our primary instincts at birth. Babies are hardwired to seek closeness and touch which causes hormones that enhance brain development.

Sexuality is so much broader than just sex and as such it starts way before our kids ask about intercourse. Sexuality affects our self-image and the way we interact with others in non-sexual and in sexual relationships.

Whether or not we?re comfortable with it, humans are sexual beings and our understanding of our sexuality affects everything else in our lives.?The World Health Organization defines sexuality as:

Sexuality is a central aspect of being human throughout life and encompasses sex, gender identities and roles, sexual orientation, eroticism, pleasure, intimacy and reproduction. Sexuality is experienced and expressed in thoughts, fantasies, desires, beliefs, attitudes, values, behaviors, practices, roles and relationships.? While sexuality can include all of these dimensions, not all of them are always experienced or expressed. Sexuality is in?uenced by the interaction of biological, psychological, social, economic, political, cultural, ethical, legal, historical, religious and spiritual factors.

The good news is parents are the single most important factor in developing a healthy sexuality.

We are the first people to give our children pleasure (hugs, cuddles, boo-boo kisses), the first to teach them about their body, and their models for adult sexuality.

The way we respond to children?s actions and ideas can either enhance or cripple their developing sexuality.

And it all starts well before the first ?birds and bees? discussion. You can start right now with your tiny newborn.

Body Knowledge

Infants are naturally curious about their bodies. Even before speech, they play with their feet, ears, nose, everything! So, of course, they find their genitals interesting too.

Diaper changes and bath time are a great opportunity to teach your kids about their bodies.

I talk a running commentary to my babies all day. ?Hearing language is important so i just narrate everything I?m doing, including diaper changes.

This is also a great time to practice if saying ?vulva? and ?scrotum? makes you blush!? Get used to it when they?re little and you?ll be a pro by the time they come to you with questions.

Speaking of vulvas. Yes, you need to use the real words for body parts. Why? Well first, it is just respect. I don?t generally think we do any good to our kids to dumb down concepts. Kids like to be leveled with as equals.

But secondly, your child needs the vocabulary to communicate about her own body. As mentioned in 10 Ways To Talk To Your Kids About Sexual Abuse, a child can not tell you that something is wrong if they don?t have words to explain it.

Don?t worry if the idea of using medical words scares you. That?s ok. Most of us grew up not talking about our ?wee wees? or ?privates?. If you need a refresher on the real names for our anatomy check out Planned Parenthood?s simple refresher on male and female reproductive anatomy.

The most important thing to remember is that you are teaching them about their bodies, no matter what you do or say. Make what you do and say what you want them to learn.

For example,

You say/do?	Your child learns?
(While diaper changing) look embarrassed, stammer, and rush out a ?that?s your wee wee? while finishing the diaper change as fast as possible.	Mommy sounds funny when she talks about this but not when she talks about my elbow.There must be something different about this ?wee wee.?
Instead say ?mommy?s washing your testicles and penis? the same as you say ?mommy?s washing your ears.?	I have a body that has ears, nose, penis, testicles, etc.? Mommy likes to tell me about my body so she must like my body.
Rush in a panic to shut the bathroom door because your kid saw you naked	Naked is not ok.? I should hide my body.
Instead just naturally go about your business.? Bathe with your kids in the room (or take baths with them).? This goes for opposite sex parents too.	Mommy is naked and I?m naked too. Mommy has ears and nose but she doesn?t have a penis.
Your baby boy is playing with his penis.? You shoo his hand away and tell him not to touch.	Mommy doesn?t care when I touch my toes, why is touching this area ?bad??
Instead treat it like you would the foot-play.? You don?t want to over do it or ignore it.? ?What do you got there? Is that your penis?? in a ?parentese? voice.? The time will come for ?I see you are touching your penis.? That?s fine but we only do that at home,? or something along those lines relating to public behavior. Your toddler sees their opposite-sex sibling?s genitals during a diaper change and reaches out to touch it.? You visibly freak out and exclaim ?No! Don?t touch!?	Mommy touches my body all the time but I?m not allowed to touch the baby?s body.? The baby?s body must be bad or my touch must be bad.
Instead remain calm.? Curiosity is completely normal regarding body differences.? I?ll admit that I let my 2 year old daughter touch her brothers? penises once when they were first born and if she were older I would let her change their diapers so it isn?t ?scandalous? for an older child to touch a baby?s genitals.? I?d say ?that?s his penis.? We don?t touch other people?s genitals without permission.? And sometimes I add ?your brother?s genitals are his and yours belong to you.? You shouldn?t let anyone touch them without permission.?? I don?t make a cliff note about doctors and adults because I think they need permission too.? I don?t want my daughter to blindly trust grown ups.? No one, even a doctor, has a right to touch her if she is uncomfortable.	People are different. They have different bodies and that is good.? I have control over my body and who touches it and so do other people.

As adults, we have all kinds of value judgments about genitals. They are good or bad, allowed here but not there, used for this but not that.

But kids aren?t born with these rules. Some of them you will need to teach your kids (public nudity is frowned upon) but in the early years, the most important thing is that you teach them their bodies are good, normal, and pleasurable things and that it belongs to them.

Avoid anything that would make them feel their bodies need to be hidden, that they are dirty or ?secret?, or that touching them is bad.

Don?t stress about situations that seem embarrassing to you (e.g. you kids yells ?I have a vagina!? to the waitress at Olive Garden.? Yes, this happened.).? Social appropriateness will come. In the meantime it is much more important for her to develop a healthy awareness of her body and not be shamed.

As we progress more into 2013, however, the trending content related to HR technology will surely change. As a result, to stay up-to-date, one needs to at least occasionally ? at least every three months or so ? repeat the process.

And through the same process, it?s easy to learn quickly about any HR-related topic that B2B marketers and PR professional might need to know about for their content marketing, inbound marketing and other marketing and PR initiatives.

China regulator seeking more information on HSBC-Ping An deal

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China's insurance regulator is seeking more information from Ping An Insurance after reviewing HSBC's planned sale of its $9.4 billion stake in China's No.2 insurer to Thailand's CP Group.

The request comes amid concerns about the deal's funding triggered by the possible withdrawal of a crucial loan from China Development Bank (CDB). Reuters reported on Tuesday that CDB is reconsidering its offer to finance a substantial portion of the deal, after the Chinese and Hong Kong media said funding from CP's first installment came from people not affiliated with CP. The company has denied the reports.

"The CIRC has received an application from Ping An Group regarding the stake transfer, conducted a preliminary review according to rules, and notified the company to provide additional materials," the CIRC said in an emailed statement to Reuters on Thursday, without specifying what additional information it was seeking.

The CIRC has set a deadline of February 1 for final approval of the transaction, which would have HSBC exit from a lucrative investment that it now sees as offering no long-term strategic benefits.

The deal requires approval because HSBC held 16 percent of Ping An's shares, more than the 5 percent threshold above which prospective owners need CIRC permission. CP Group planned to buy the stake from HSBC in two stages: an initial outright purchase of 20 percent of the shares on offer, and then a CDB-funded second offer for the remaining 80 percent.

It is this second stage that is now in jeopardy as CDB wavers in its commitment and CIRC investigates the structure of the whole transaction. Late last month, media reports in China and Hong Kong said the first CP payment came from funding sources not directly tied to the Thai conglomerate, contrary to the terms of the agreement.

"The transaction is undergoing the normal approval procedures and there is nothing further to disclose at this time," Ping An Insurance said in an e-mailed statement on Thursday.

The failure of the deal would be a blow to HSBC Holdings Plc and an embarrassment to the various parties involved in a deal which at $9.4 billion was set to be the largest ever inbound acquisition deal in China.

CP spokeswoman Suthana Hongthong said the deal is still on. "Everything is still in process," she said without giving details.

UK Border Agency Spends Christmas Sending Texts Telling Legal ...

The UK Border Agency (UKBA) has a bit of a problem on its hands after handing off some outdated information to a private company acting on its behalf. The agency is attempting to kick 174,000 illegal immigrants out of the UK, a job it apparently feels is best handled by a third party, utilizing text messages and email. Unfortunately, due to inaccurate information, legal?migrants are being politely asked to pack up and go.

Capita, which won a ?40m UKBA contract to trace 174,000 migrants living illegally in the country from September, has been sending text messages and emails to them telling they are required to leave Britain. But immigration lawyers say those who have received Capita's texts in recent weeks include a woman with a valid British passport and a man with a valid visa who had invested ?1m in a UK-based business.

As if suddenly being asked to leave a country you're legally residing in wasn't upsetting enough, the fact that these "hit the road" messages were sent over the holiday season only made things worse.

Alison Harvey, of the Immigration Law Practitioners' Association, said it had asked for the messages not to be sent over the holiday period: "We were concerned at reports of people who had valid leave to be in the UK receiving the texts and that, over the holiday period, it would be difficult for them to get in touch with their lawyer and they would be anxious and distressed with no possibility of reassurance. Our request was declined."

Home Secretary Theresa May has promised to look into the erroneous texts and is being pressured to halt the program altogether. To its credit, the UKBA has owned up to providing the questionable info:

UKBA admitted the problem was with the accuracy of its records: "We advise anyone contacted in error to contact us so records can be updated. Where our records show that people are here illegally, it is vital we are able to contact them as we are determined that they should return home. This is the first time a government has taken proactive steps to deal with this pool of cases, some of which date back to December 2008."

Capita has a contract worth potentially??40m, but is paid for results (migrants leaving the country), rather than guaranteed the entire amount, so it seems unlikely that it has anything to gain by contacting legal migrants. It's also unlikely that sending stern text messages will have much impact on the immigrants the UK government wants to see removed. Of course, Capita may not have the staffing to pursue illegal immigrants with anything more manpower-intensive than texts and emails. One week prior to receiving this contract, it was taken to task by a National Audit Office report which showed that it failed to provide enough qualified and competent courtroom interpreters (through its subsidiary, Applied Language Solutions [ALS]), leading to a large number of abandoned trials.

"The ministry overlooked its own due diligence process, which showed ALS was simply too small to shoulder a contract of this value. The ministry also took no account of the resolve of many experienced interpreters not to work for this company. Against a target of 98%, ALS supplied an interpreter in only 58% of hearings in February 2012.

"This unacceptably poor performance led to courtroom chaos," the report said. It forced court staff to interrupt their core duties to find interpreters at short notice and triggered a steep rise in the number of abandoned trials ? ALS could not even guarantee that interpreters had undergone mandatory criminal records checks."

And then there's the question of whether spending ?40m to remove illegal migrants is a wise idea. In an article published a few days later, The Guardian points out that the government's hardline approach to immigration is damaging the "multibillion-pound market" in foreign students.

Nicola Dandridge, chief executive of Universities UK, said the flurry of recent statements by senior ministers calling for a crackdown on "bogus students" had given the impression that overseas students were no longer welcome and was driving them towards competitor countries such as the US, Canada and Australia.

"We are concerned about the language and the atmosphere that is being created, not least because it plays very, very badly internationally," Dandridge said. "Whatever the intentions of the politicians are ? every time these sorts of comments are made by the home secretary or others it does have a potentially very damaging impact internationally."

A study by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (pdf) estimated that overseas students contribute nearly ?8 billion a year to Britain's economy and projects it to near ?17 billion by 2025. Not only does putting out the "unwelcome mat" for foreign students adversely affect the UK's economy, it also does damage to its standing in the global marketplace, as Dandrige explains:

"What universities are reporting to us [is that] they are seeing significant drops, particularly from India, from Pakistan and now from China and Saudi Arabia. These are countries that send large numbers and also they are important countries in terms of international engagement and industry engagement, so we want to be promoting and fostering relations with them, not erecting barriers."

Between Capita's own issues, the UKGA's failure to provide up-to-date information and the fact that chasing immigrants out might not be in the country's best interest, this situation has the potential to develop into a black eye for all involved. Even if the number of legal immigrants who spent the holiday season wondering if they were being deported is low compared to the total contacted, it's still a very inauspicious start for a questionable program.

Genome Reveals Comb Jellies' Ancient Origin

New sequencing data challenges prior thinking that sponges were the most ancient animals in evolutionary history

Animals evolved gradually, from the lowly sponge to the menagerie of tentacled, winged and brainy creatures that inhabit Earth today. This idea makes such intuitive sense that biologists are now stunned by genome-sequencing data suggesting that the sponges were preceded by complex marine predators called comb jellies.

Although they are gelatinous like jellyfish, comb jellies form their own phylum, known as ctenophores. Trees of life typically root the comb jellies' lineage between the group containing jellyfish and sea anemones and the one containing animals with heads and rears ? which include slugs, flies and humans. Comb jellies paddle through the sea with iridescent cilia and snare prey with sticky tentacles. They are much more complex than sponges ? they have nerves, muscles, tissue layers and light sensors, all of which the sponges lack.

?It?s just wild to imagine? that comb jellies evolved before sponges, says Billie Swalla, a developmental biologist at the University of Washington in Seattle and a leading member of the team sequencing the genome of the comb jelly Pleurobrachia bachei. But the team is suggesting just that, in results they presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology, held on 3?7 January in San Francisco, California.

Despite comb jellies' complexity, DNA sequences in the Pleurobrachia genome place them at the base of the animal tree of life, announced Swalla's colleague Leonid Moroz, a neurobiologist at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Another team presented results from genome sequencing for the comb jelly Mnemiopsis leidyi, and found that the phylum lands either below, or as close to the base as, sponges on the tree.

?We?ve always thought that predator?prey interactions and sensory adaptations evolved long after the origin of sponges,? Swalla says. ?Now we need to imagine early life as a sponge, ctenophore and everything in between.? Because millions of species have gone extinct since animals appeared some 542 million years ago, Swalla says, the ancestor of all animals might look different from modern comb jellies and sponges.

Gene families, cell-signaling networks and patterns of gene expression in comb jellies support ancient origins as well. For example, Moroz and his team found that comb jellies grow their nerves with unique sets of genes. ?These are aliens,? Moroz jokes. He suggests that comb jellies might be descendants of Ediacaran organisms, mysterious organisms that appear in the fossil record before animals. Indeed, in 2011, paleontologists claimed that one of these 580-million-year-old fossils resembled comb jellies.

Andy Baxevanis, a comparative biologist at the US National Human Genome Research Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, and a leader on the Mnemiopsis genome project, says that comb jellies are the only animals that lack certain genes crucial to producing microRNA ? short RNA chains that help to regulate gene expression. Moreover, he points out, sponges and comb jellies lack other gene families that all other animals possess.

If comb jellies evolved before sponges, the sponges probably lost some of their ancestors' complexity. Alternatively, says Sally Leys, a biologist at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, sponges may have complexity that scientists have yet to appreciate. ?A lot of sponges are more exquisite than a lump on a rock,? she says.

Skeptics wonder whether a high rate of genetic mutation in comb jellies might be causing the lineage to seem closer to the bottom of the tree than it really is. ?In the analyses I?ve done, ctenophores are the most problematic taxon. They jump around depending on which genes you use and which animals you include,? says Gert W?rheide, a molecular paleobiologist at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in Germany. At the meeting, W?rheide presented a tree of life created by comparing ribosomal protein sequences. In it, sponges remained rooted in their bottom-most spot.

NASA to Announce Launch of New Earth-Observing Satellite

NASA plans to announce tomorrow (Jan. 10) the launch of a new satellite, the Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM), to monitor Earth's landscape and the changes to it.

The new satellite, scheduled to launch Feb. 11, will replace the Landsat 5 satellite, which is to be decommissioned in the coming months, the U.S. Geological Survey reported in December.

The announcement will be made at 1 p.m. EST at NASA headquarters in Washington. You can watch it live here, as well as on NASA Television and the agency's website.

Landsat 5 is the longest-operating Earth-observing satellite mission in history, according to the USGS. Launched in 1984 with a three-year design life, it has been taking images and recording changes on the Earth's surface ever since. The satellite almost failed several times, but engineers brought it back to life. However, the recent failure of a gyroscope (which helps satellites maintain their orientation) left no option but to end the mission, the USGS said in its release.

"Any major event since 1984 that left a mark on this Earth larger than a football field was likely recorded by Landsat 5, whether it was a hurricane, a tsunami, a wildfire, deforestation or an oil spill," USGS Director Marcia McNutt said in the statement. "We look forward to a long and productive continuation of the Landsat program, but it is unlikely there will ever be another satellite that matches the outstanding longevity of Landsat 5."

The satellite monitored the effects of the devastating floods along the Mississippi River in 2011, snapped an image of the path of a tornado in Massachusetts that same year, and helped the effort to battle raging wildfires in Arizona.

LDCM, like Landsat 5, is a collaboration between NASA and the USGS that will continue the Landsat program's 40-year data record of monitoring Earth from space. Landsat 5 has orbited the globe more than 150,000 times and recorded over 2.5 million images.

Choices For Apple's Next Retail Chief - Business Insider

Apple has been pretty hush hush about its search for a new SVP of retail following the unexpected departure of retail boss John Browett.

As John Paczkowski of AllThingsD reports, Apple can't afford to make another hiring mistake. So for the last several weeks, Paczkowski has been poking around to find ideal candidates.?

He found three from inside Apple who would be a good fit for the position:

• Steve Cano, Apple's manager of retail stores
• Bob Bridger, Apple VP for Retail Real Estate and Development
• Jeremy McDougal, Apple VP of Retail

His sources are divided over who would be best suited to lead Apple's retail operations.?One says McDougal would be best, considering that he already has the VP of Retail title. But another says Cano would be best because he's the most well-rounded out of the three and understands Apple's retail store culture.

Paczkowski also named five candidates from outside of Apple that Apple would be lucky to hire away, given their experience working for global consumer brands:

• Angela Ahrendts, CEO, Burberry
• Victor Luis, President, International Group at Coach
• Jeanne Jackson, President, Director to Consumer at Nike
• John Culver, President, Starbucks Coffee China and Asia Pacific
• Paul Gainer, Executive Vice President, Global Disney Store

However, it would be a hard sell to get these people to leave those powerful positions and join Apple because, as one of?Paczkowski's source said "Apple is not a true retailer."

For now, the retail team reports directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook and Cook is expected to take his time to find a replacement.?
